Frequently Asked Questions

Chiropractic care is when a Doctor of Chiropractic uses an adjustment to help restore proper motion and alignment to the joints throughout the body. This is accomplished by relieving abnormal stress and pressure in the joints that the central nervous system is contained in. In doing so the central nervous system is allowed to work more efficient to keep you from pain and dis-ease.

Chiropractors are medically trained physicians that specialize in musculoskeletal system to help alleviate aches and pains in the body. Common conditions that Doctor of Chiropractic can help with are headaches, neck pain, low back pain, tight muscles, and other joint pain. Doctor of Chiropractic work to get overall health and wellness for the entire body.

Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to find subluxations within the back and other joints. A subluxation is when two joints become mal-aligned and is no longer in the proper position and the motion has been decreased. When there is a subluxation, the abnormal position can lead to pressure on nerves, discs, vasculature, and abnormal strain on surrounding muscles. The subluxation, does not, necessarily mean there is pain in the area. If we can restore proper position and motion in the joint, we hope to prevent pain from occurring.

By utilizing an adjustment, the chiropractor works to restore proper function to the joint and nervous system. The brain sends messages through the nerves to different organs, tissues, parts of the body. When there is a subluxation, there is interference with the relay of nerve conduction from the brain to the parts of the body that it is innervating. An adjustment goal is to remove that interference and allow the body to heal and restore its health.

An adjustment works to restore position and joint motion. When this happens the interference from the signals from the brain to the nerves is broken and the flow on nerve conduction is restored. The adjustment can be done by either the hand or with the use of an instrument. Often times during an adjustment a “pop” is heard, just like the sound that his heard when you “pop” your knuckles. This “pop” sound is the release of gases in the joint cavity that are being released. This sound is called a cavitation and is completely safe.

Our goal at Sahlfeld Family Chiropractic is to get you to your healthiest you that you can be. For some people the process to get you to the healthiest you can take longer than others, but we ultimately try and get the surrounding muscles and joints to stabilize. If the doctor and patient agree that we can extend your care we will try to extend treatments out to 4 to 6 weeks, which is called “maintenance care.” Our ultimate goal for our patients is that when you reach maintenance care. Most patients come to find that once they reach maintenance care, if they have a flair-up or aggravation in the area of care that it takes less time to get back to optimal health if they have consistent care.
